Disturbing quote from soon-to-be Supreme Court nominee -

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion [as a judge] than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

Gay Left Targets Mary Bono Mack

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

One of the gay community’s strongest allies on Capitol Hill, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (R-CA), has been targeted for defeat in her race against Democratic Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet.

Equality California, a gay-rights group, has already taken an interest in the race. The group’s executive director, Geoff Kors, said his organization typically does not endorse in federal races. However, because Bono Mack declined to oppose Proposition 8, Pougnet’s race is on the radar screen.

Bono Mack’s office said that the congresswoman does not take positions on state ballot initiatives. They noted, however, that Bono Mack broke with her party to vote against legislation that would have defined marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Nevertheless, the gay community appears to be focused on the campaign.

“The LGBT community sees this as a very important race,” Kors said. “People see Steve as the most credible challenger she will ever have.”

Because of this race and another California General Assembly race, Equality California is opening an office in the district and devoting at least two field staffers to the area.

Whoa! Gingrich Blasts Pelosi!

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich blasts current Speaker Nancy Pelosi in this interview with ABC News.  Click here to listen.  Here is the transcript of the good stuff -

“It’s very hard for me to talk calmly about where we are. I think this is the most despicable, dishonest and vicious political effort I’ve seen in my lifetime. Right after 9/11, this country was terrified. We had an anthrax attack; we had a real danger that there might be a nuclear attack. We were deeply worried about terrorists.

Nancy Pelosi was the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee. She had an absolute obligation to know what was going on and she had an absolute obligation to speak up.

Men and women risk their lives all over this planet protecting us. And she has now viciously and dishonestly turned on them.

It is despicable. As an Army brat, I find it unbelievably offensive that left wing Democrats don’t care about defending America. They care about hunting down and purging their political opponents in a way which is going to cripple ths country.

Obama lover Sullivan takes him to task

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Andrew Sullivan is finally coming to realization that Obama has no intention of keeping his campaign promises -

Yesterday, Robert Gibbs gave non-answer after non-answer on civil unions and Obama’s clear campaign pledge to grant equal federal rights for gay couples; non-answer after non-answer on the military’s remaining ban on honest servicemembers. What was once a categorical pledge is now - well let’s call it the toilet paper that it is. I spent yesterday trying to get a better idea of what’s intended on all fronts, and the overwhelming sense - apart from a terror of saying anything about gay people on the record - is that we are in the same spot as in every Democratic administration: the well-paid leaders of the established groups get jobs and invites, and that’s about it. Worse: we will get a purely symbolic, practically useless hate crimes bill that they will then wave in our faces to prove they need do nothing more.

Senate Republicans Find Silver Lining

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Roll Call’s David Drucker has this piece on the Senate Republican Conference -

There may be one advantage for the GOP after Sen. Arlen Specter (Pa.) defected to the Democratic Party.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) now leads a leaner, more politically unified Conference and arguably has a freer hand to swing a conservative hatchet at President Barack Obama and Congressional Democrats.

Norquist on “empathy”

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Conservative leader Grover Norquist weighs in on the pending Supreme Court nomination and Obama’s “empathy” qualification in Politico’s Arena.

The first problem with the word “empathy” is what it is not. It is not other words such as “The Constitution” or “the law.”
